Replacement of old oil or gas heating systems
Heating replacement in Solothurn - new oil and gas heating system
The replacement of old oil or gas heating systems is regulated in Switzerland. In many cantons, new fossil-fuelled heating systems are only permitted to a limited extent. In the canton of Solothurn, however, it is still possible to replace or renew existing heating systems.

Solothurn: Replacing a heating system can be worthwhile
The time to replace your heating system is favourable: in Solothurn you can continue to replace your existing oil or gas heating system, while many other cantons already prohibit the installation of new fossil fuel systems.

What to consider
Legal requirements in the canton of Solothurn
Compliance with specifications
Compliance with the following requirements is important in the canton of Solothurn:
- the CO₂ limits of the canton must be complied with.
- The replacement of a heating system is generally subject to notification, but does not require authorisation.
- For larger projects, the cantonal energy ordinance (EnVSO) must be observed.
- Detailed information can be found in the Ordinance to the Energy Act of the Canton of Solothurn (EnVSO)
Advantages
Replacing a heating system in good time has the following advantages:
- More efficiency: New systems work much more economically and reduce energy costs.
- Safe function: Outdated systems harbour risks due to wear and tear and inadequate exhaust gas routing.
- Utilising subsidies: The Impulse programme of the Canton of Solothurn, which has been running since January 2025, supports the replacement of old heating systems with financial contributions. However, the focus is on environmentally friendly systems, which we also offer: Pellet heating. There is also more money for connecting to a local district heating network.
Replacement of the exhaust system
We support you in replacing your flue gas system - from the initial consultation to commissioning:
- Adaptation or new construction of the flue gas system: Every heating system needs a suitable flue gas system. We check existing systems, renovate defective pipes or install new flue gas ducts made of stainless steel or plastic (PP single-walled or LAS double-walled). We also realise roof ducts, fire protection bulkheads and wall ducts.
- Acceptance and notification: We take care of all the necessary documentation and notifications to the cantonal authorities to ensure that your system complies with the regulations.
Reasons for a refurbishment
Exhaust system: new build or renovation
ArtKamin renovates or renews your flue gas system at the same time. It ensures the safe removal of combustion gases and is a central element. When replacing a heating system, it must be inspected. We pay attention to:
- Tight flue gas routing in accordance with VKF and SIA standards
- Safe roof penetrations and fire protection bulkheads
- Choice of suitable material (stainless steel or plastic)
- Energy efficiency and optimised dimensioning
- Technical and legal Fire protection regulations
For condensing boiler systems, we generally use PP (single-walled plastic pipes) or LAS (air/flue gas systems), as they are ideally suited to the low flue gas temperatures of these heating appliances.

Sample calculation
Savings potential through efficient systems
Assumed: A detached house with 150 m² of living space in Solothurn, previously operated with an older oil heating system.
| System / plant | Consumption (litres of heating oil / year) | Efficiency | Consumption reduction | Heating oil costs / year (CHF 1.10 / litre) | Savings / year |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Old system (older than 25 years) | 2 800 l | approx. 72 % | – | CHF 3 080 | – |
| Modern oil condensing heating | 2 200 l | approx. 90-92 % | approx. 22 % | CHF 2 420 | CHF 660 / year |
| Optimised condensing boiler system with new flue gas system | 2 050 l | approx. 94 % | approx. 27 % | CHF 2 255 | CHF 825 / year |
Explanation of the calculation
- Old system: Old oil heating systems with low efficiency (approx. 70-75 %) require around 2,800 litres per year for a detached house of this size.
- New condensing boiler: Modern condensing technology also utilises the heat from the flue gas. This reduces consumption by around 20-25 %.
- New flue gas system (e.g. LAS system made of stainless steel or PP): A correctly dimensioned, condensate-tight flue gas system improves the flue gas extraction and the calorific value utilisation. In this way, a further 3-5 % increase in efficiency can be achieved.
- Cost comparison: At an oil price of CHF 1.10 per litre, you save between CHF 660 and CHF 825 per year - just by switching systems.
- Amortisation: A modern condensing boiler often pays for itself after around 8 - 10 years - depending on usage and energy price.
We don't just provide you with professional advice. As chimney builders, we also take on the renovation or new construction of flue gas systems and chimneys.
